Fuel subsidies and carbon emission: evidence from asymmetric modelling

چکیده

It is expected that fuel subsidy removal should hinder carbon emissions growth through low energy consumption channels amid higher prices. However, outliers in this theoretical disposition make empirical proof of the subsidy-carbon intensity apt and primitive. Despite established abolishment gains for climate economic welfare, relevance, magnitude policy implications remain dimly. This paper employs non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) estimation procedure to gauge contemporaneous influence Nigeria. Findings revealed inversely relates Nigeria’s emission short run long run. The study recommends a complementary option ensures additional financial savings government be invested public sector can cushion effect relative income loss citizenry. Nigerian ensure measures are kept place discourage overconsumption alternative (for example coal) could also threaten green economy paradox.

Fossil fuel subsidies and health.

In calling for a switch of fossil fuel subsidies to funding of universal health coverage, Vinay Gupta and colleagues (June, 2015) miss two health-relevant issues: all fossil fuels are not the same and all subsidies are not the same. Liquefi ed petroleum gas (LPG) has major, direct health advantages in household cooking in countries of low and middle income, its primary use. Indeed, the Global B...

Multicriteria comparison of fuel policies: Renewable-fuel mandate, emission standard, and carbon tax

We develop a two-region partial equilibrium model of the global market for liquid fuel and analyze different policies, such as biofuel mandate, emission standard, and fuel carbon tax. We rank these policies under different criteria, such as greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions, expenditure on fuel imports, the impact on fuel consumers and producers, the quantity of biofuel, etc. Our analysis suggests...

The Environmental Cost of Global Fuel Subsidies

Despite increasing calls for reform many countries continue to provide subsidies for gasoline and diesel. This paper quantifies the external costs from global fuel subsidies using the latest available data and estimates from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Under preferred assumptions about supply and demand elasticities, current subsidies cause $44 billion in external costs annu...
